A STUNNING LOCATION

Step back in time at one of South Lakeland’s historic houses or fascinating museums, relax on a lake cruise or steam railway or follow in the footsteps of great literary characters like William Wordsworth, Beatrix Potter and John Ruskin who all lived in the Southern Lake District and whose homes you can visit.

Coronation Hall

The Hall is a mid scale theatre with 636 seats. It hosts many major arts performances including the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, operatic companies, ballet, music and theatre. Log on to its comprehensive website for details of the current programme.

It is one of the principal buildings in the Market town of Ulverston and after extensive refurbishment in 1996, now offers superb facilities and attracts many artistes, which amongst others include the English Touring Opera.

Sir John Barrow’s Monument

The monument on Hoad Hill in winter Sir John Barrow was an intrepid explorer, a founder member of the Royal Geographic Society, and for forty years Second Secretary to the Admiralty - an extremely powerful position. He was responsible for spearheading many expeditions with the Royal Navy. His discoveries included the North West Passage. When he died in 1848, the town constructed a monument in his memory. Public subscription raised sufficient funds to erect a replica of a former Eddystone Lighthouse, on top of Hoad Hill overlooking the town. The monument was opened in 1850.

The Lakes Glass Centre - Heron Glass and Cumbria Glass

Cumbria Crystal and Heron Glass can be found under one roof at the Lakes Glass Centre.

The Glass Centre is situated on the edge of Ulverston at Oubas Hill, next to Booths Supermarket. Visitors can look around the factory and see the Crystal and art glass being made. Visit the crystal and glass shop and sample the delights of the Lighthouse Café.

The Gateway to Furness Exhibition illustrates the rich heritage of the area.

The Cumbrian Way

Ulverston is the Starting point of the Cumbria Way- a 70 mile walk through the best National Park in England. Walkers start the first stage at the Cumbria Way Marker sculpture in the Gill in the town centre. The sculpture depicts a compass, and the conical design contains minerals from the entire walk, including limestone from Ulverston and Sandstone from Carlisle. The first stage is a beautiful journey to Coniston through the south of the Lake District.

Laurel and Hardy Museum

Ulverston is the birthplace of Stan Laurel and the town boasts the world’s only Laurel and Hardy Museum. Visitors can see a magnificent collection of Laurel and Hardy ephemera. Take a seat in the small cinema and watch classic Stan and Ollie movies.

Conishead Priory

Conishead Priory is a superb example of an early Victoria Gothic Mansion. It is now home to an international Buddhist Centre and unique Temple. We offer a fascinating one hour guided tour of the house and temple. You can stroll through our beautiful grounds and woodlands, overlooking Morecambe Bay, visit our gift shop and enjoy tea and cakes in our conservatory cafe.

To find the Priory, take the A5087 off the A590, the coast to Barrow from Ulverston.

Children can come face to face with animals from around the world at two wildlife centres, an aquarium and a sheep and wool centre or enjoy a magical indoor recreation of Beatrix Potter’s famous characters. The whole family can explore deep underground in a slate mine too.

If you are looking for a souvenir of your visit, there are working potteries, photographic, art and craft galleries, design studios and plenty of other shopping opportunities, including an outlet centre in Kendal.

For those who want to get active, there’s a climbing wall, leisure centre and a high wire adventure experience in Grizedale Forest, Go Ape!

Lanternhouse

Lanternhouse is an inspirational building and a pioneering centre for community and celebratory arts. Lanternhouse is open for events, exhibitions, courses and workshops around the year. The building is available for hire for meetings, theatre and conferences.
